You don’t want to format the drive. That will delete all of your stuff. The problem is macs use a different file system (way or organizing and storing files) than windows pc’s and windows does not natively understand how to read a mac file system.
You will need to install software on your PC that understands how to access a mac formatted hard drive. Macdrive is the only product I’m familiar with that does it.

mac and windows dont work well with each other. they have different file formats that each other cant read. you have to find the windows versions of all the programs and install them. even then i doubt it will work becuase its still probably a different file format it was saved in.

If you haven’t already put stuff on the hard drive, or if everything on it is still on your old Mac. Then reformatting the drive to work with windows is the easiest method. To do this open connect the drive to the Mac go to Disk Utility in the utilities folder of the applications folder. Then select the drive on the lefthand side and click the partition tab. The format you want to choose is important. It will defaut to Mac OS extended which works well for the Mac, but won’t work with windows. Choose the windows option I think it has FAT in it or something. This will work with both the windows and Mac computers, albeit it will be slower on the Mac as it is not the fastest format for Mac OS. If you don’t want to lose all of the information on the hard drive then finding a program for windows that will read the drive will be necessary.

I hate to tell you this, but you should go back to Mac if you can. You switched the wrong way. Sorry…
